Ankatank’s Blue Period

So, I’m noticing something a of pattern… I have kind of a lot of blue work from the past year or two. There are even 1 or 2 projects that aren’t yet up on the site (coming soon) which fall into this category. This includes shades of blue, like seafoam green and teal, which might be a stretch but I think it still counts. Note to next client: your project can NOT blue! This is not to say I don’t like those projects, they are in fact some of my favorites. But dammit, I’m declaring it as my new year’s resolution to add more color to my portfolio so if anyone asks me to make it blue, you are getting redirected to this blog post. Do you really want to make me break my New Year’s Resolution? Do you? Could you really live with yourself? (I mean if you really really want blue, okay, I guess we can figure something out… But how about we at least give another color a try first? Marigold? Fuschia? Persimmon? Tangerine? Kelly Green—or does Kelly Green fall under my broadly-defined “blue-ish”?)

Stop SOPA & PIPA

Stop SOPA & PIPA, save the Internet. Without a free, uncensored, un-policed Internet, I and so many others couldn’t do what we do. “What we do” is anything from run and promote a small business, protest injustices, communicate and collaborate with people across the world, share our creative projects and ideas with millions of people and gain a following all at once through a series of retweets…

GOOD Magazine articulates it much better, as does the video posted below from fightforthefuture.org. You can read more at Good.is and also hear what my better half has to say on the matter here.

GOOD listed several petitions you can sign which will hopefully help put an end to these bills: Popvox, Avaaz, Engine Advocacy, and Fight For The Future. You can also contact your representatives. Wikipedia has a form where you can enter your zip code and it will give you contact information for the representatives in your area.

The internet is one of the greatest technological innovations of our time and it has changed the way think, interact, create, and innovate. Let’s do everything we can to help save it!

Who’s Your Mommy?

In honor of the HIGHLY ANTICIPATED series finale of one of my FAVORITE TV shows, and as an excuse to blog about How I Met Your Mother on a blog that is supposed to be strictly design and work related, I bring you WHO’S YOUR MOMMY. I cannot to wait to find out in 81 minutes, WHO is the mother of Ted Moseby‘s children… I admit, I wasn’t an early adopter of How I Met Your Mother, but I did just watch/rewatch the whole series in it’s entirety (I wasn’t just wasting time, I was multi-tasking, probably making something like this…) and in chronological order so that I was ready to watch the finale in REAL TIME. I think that makes me a legit fan, so don’t get on my case about “not watching from the start.” I came around. That’s what’s important. Anyways enough talk and more typography.

Okay UPDATE (just moments after posting this)… I think it’s just the SEASON finale tonight… This is good and bad. Good: more How I Met Your Mother! Bad: I want to know the mother! AND this piece of typography was supposed to be timely!!! I could still be wrong about being wrong, and have been right all along… But we’ll find out in 32 minutes.

UPDATE AGAIN. I was totally wrong! There’s a whole season still to come! Ooops.

MacInspires Branding

This is the branding for MacInspires, an Apple repair shop in Grenwich, CT. MacInspires repairs Apple products and also consults and educates their customers about their Apple products. MacInspires truly believe in Apple products and to quote the client, “they (Apple) don’t just create great products, they create products that enrich and change our lives.” This logo needed to convey that they are not just a repair shop, but they are furthering Apples mission to enrich people’s lives, and educate, through Apple products.

The rainbow colors used in the logo reference the early Apple logo’s use of rainbow colors without overtly referencing the Apple logo (past or present) or branding, in order to allow MacInspires to have its own unique identity. Sometimes the rainbow is present, sometimes only one of the colors of the rainbow will be present. The cloud represents a thought, or, inspiration. I created variations of the logo to be used in different instances as shown above. The option with words in the inspiration cloud (slide no.3) was an idea that could be used in MacInspire’s retail space. The version with the enlarged text and small cloud to the right (slide no.5) is going to be used as the storefront awning.

I will also be working on the website design for MacInspires and will update here once that is complete.

Design By Many Website

Design By Many is a website I designed for the architects over at Case Design. This is a really cool concept and was a really fun site to work on. In a nutshell, what it is is a challenge community for 3-D modeling professionals, students, and hobbyists. There are challenges posed by anyone, as well as challenges that are sponsored (by the likes of HP) with prizes. Challenges are voted up and down by the community, or by the judges in the cases of the sponsored challenges. Also, users have to post their source files.

I designed the site and all necessary assets such as forms and icons. There were a lot of pages that I designed, and not all of those were implemented when it was built. I have some of those documented over here.

Ten Stories Tall Website

This is the website for the independent film, Ten Stories Tall. I was pretty excited to work on this because it has famous people in it, like funny man Jim Gaffigan, and LEGENDARY Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club!

The design was supposed to be kind of uplifting to contrast with the film’s somber tone and heavy theme (life & death) so the use of bright colors and a large airy background image was used. I designed a custom logo for use on the site and also built the site. The site was built in WordPress so the clients can update the site themselves and also incorportates jQuery and Typekit.

DigitalMusic.org Rejected Website Icons

I designed a set of icons for DigitalMusic.org, a website I also designed, and these are a few of those icons which didn’t make the final cut. I thought some of them could totally be re-appropriated for other uses…

SLIDE no. 2: A social-networking community for physical computing nerds or electronics enthusiasts.
SLIDE no. 3: Obviously, a Korean or Japanese video-dating site for teenagers.
SLIDE no. 4: Since it has the DMO logo, it still only works for DTV. But if they decide to go more retro…
SLIDE no. 5: A Danish product design company that makes minimal rolodexes that spin very fast and with supreme ease.
SLIDE no. 6: Well. If digitalmusic.org ever gets into scuba instruction or creates an astronaut training program, they will certainly be regretting rejecting this icon.
